71% female garment workers use family planning methods: survey

Seventy-one percent of female garment workers use family planning methods, according to a survey conducted in factories of five industrial areas -- Chattogram, Dhaka city, Gazipur, Narayanganj, and Savar.

The survey was done by South Asian Network on Economic Modeling (SANEM) and Microfinance Opportunities (MFO) -- conducted on 886 female workers, a press release said.

Of those who responded, 52 percent female RMG workers reported using contraceptive pills while 30 percent use some kind of contraceptive injection, nine percent use condoms and seven percent use "traditional methods", the release said.

The survey started since the beginning of coronavirus outbreak in Bangladesh.

The survey also showed that 44 percent female workers use clean cloth as part of their menstrual hygiene practice and 34 percent use pad.
