Temperature drops across Bangladesh, dust haze mix with fog

Temperatures have started falling across Bangladesh, especially in the northern and central parts where it has dropped significantly.

Throughout the day on Sunday the sky in these areas was covered with clouds and fog.

During winter, fog begins to form when water vapour condenses into tiny water droplets that are suspended in the air. It seems foggier for the addition of dust particles due to dry weather.

The Meteorological Department said that the weather might improve on Monday.

Meteorologist Arif Hossain said that when the humidity in the air decreases, the dust particles rise with the water vapour in the soil. This creates dense fog. Such fog is normal in winter.

The weather might remain like this for the next few days. The temperature will remain the same this week. It may decrease a bit next week, he added.

According to the Meteorological Department, a western light pressure is flowing through the northern part of Bangladesh. It is slowly moving eastwards towards Bihar. Due to this, light to heavy rain is falling in the far north of the country.

Air pollution increases

Meanwhile, experts say that the level of pollution in Dhaka has recently increased due to six types of substances and gases. Moreover, the situation is becoming critical as the pollution in Dhaka has increased excessively due to the tiny dust particles (PM2.5).

Air pollution expert and Joint Secretary of the Bangladesh Environmental Movement Prof Kamruzzaman Majumder said that the amount of dust has increased due to the dry weather. Besides, some dust from the neighbouring countries is also coming towards Bangladesh. As a result, air pollution has increased.

"If we do not take action now to tackle the pollution, we will face a worse time. So, we should take initiatives now,” he added.

According to the Air Quality Index (AQI) of AirVisual, a US-based global air testing technology company, the air pollution level in Dhaka on Monday is 239.

Dhaka stands in the third position in the world, which is very unhealthy. In the first position is Delhi (322) and in the second position is Karachi (252). On November 21, Dhaka rose to number one position in pollution.

Temperatures across the country

The lowest temperature in the country on Monday is 14.1°C in Srimangal of Sylhet division. The minimum temperature in Dhaka is 18.6°C. Similarly, 17.6°C is recorded in Mymensingh division, 17.2 °C in Chittagong, 16.6 °C in Rajshahi, 16.2°C degrees in Rangpur, 16.5°C in Khulna and 15.7°C in Barisal.

According to the Meteorological Department, seasonal low lies over South Bay, extending its trough to north Bay. Ridge of subcontinental high extends up to west Bengal and adjoining areas.

Weather may remain dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country. Moderate to thick fog may occur over river basins and light to moderate fog may occur elsewhere over the country during midnight to morning.

Night and day temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country.
