BNP leader Kamal Ibne Yusuf dies

Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party vice-chairman and former minister Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf died in a Dhaka hospital suffering from COVID-19.

He was 80.

BNP organising secretary Emran Saleh Prince said that Yusuf died at Evercare Hospital around noon on Wednesday. He left behind his widow and three daughters to mourn his death.

He was admitted to the hospital on November 19 with pneumonia and tested positive for COVID-19 on November 22.

He would be buried in his home town Faridpur on Friday after a namaj-e-janaza at Faridpur Rajedra College field at 11:00am.

His first namaj-e-janaza was held at Gulshan Azad Mosque in Dhaka after Isha prayer on Wednesday.

He was the local government minister in Abdus Satter-led BNP government in 1981 and health minister in BNP government in 1991 and disaster management minster in 2001.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a message expressed deep shock at the death of Kamal Ibne Yusuf.

He joined BNP in 1979 and was elected as Member of Parliament several times as the party candidate.

His father Chowdhury Yusuf Ali (Mohan Miah) was a central leader of Muslim League.
