A local Jubo League leader and two others have been arrested over the vandalism of a sculpture of Bagha Jatin, a revolutionary leader of the anti-British movement, on the campus of Kaya College in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia.
The arrestees were identified as Anisur Rahman Anis, 35, president of Kaya Union unit Jubo League, and his alleged accomplices Sabuj Hossain, 20, and Hridoy Ahmed, 20. They were all arrested in separate drives conducted throughout Friday night.
Kushtia Superintendent of Police SM Tanvir Arafath confirmed the matter at a press briefing at his district office on Saturday morning.
“Apart from the trio, police have been trying to nab another Jubo League activist named Bachchu, who still remains in hiding,” said the police officer.
Police primarily believe the personal feud between Anis and the college principal and its managing board led to the vandalism of the sculpture, he added.
Late Thursday night, a group of miscreants vandalized parts of the nose and face of Bagha Jatin’s sculpture.
Jatindranath Mukherjee was a Bengali anti-British revolutionary leader. He is better known as “Bagha Jatin,” who played a very important role in the anti-colonial movement during the British rule in the Indian subcontinent.
Bagha Jatin was the principal leader of the Jugantar party which was the central association of revolutionary freedom fighters in Bengal.
He met the German crown prince in Calcutta before World War I and received a promise about arms’ supply.
He was born in 1879 in Kumarkhali, Kushtia, and died at the age of 35 in Balasore, India.
Previously, an under-construction sculpture of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was also vandalized in the district town on December 5.
