Ex-Ducsu VP Nur sued for sedition

A case has been filed against Nurul Haque Nur, former vice president of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu), on charges of sedition and defamation.

Rabiul Hossain Rubel, president of Brahmanbaria District Chhatra League, filed the case in the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Ayesha Begum on Sunday morning.

The plaintiff's counsel Advocate Md Ekram Hossain said the magistrate would issue an order in this regard in the afternoon.

Rubel, the plaintiff, said: “On December 16 around 8pm, Nurul Haque Nur, from his personal account via Facebook Live, presented aggressive, false, and discouraging information about the government and various state organizations, with the intention of provoking people.

“... he repeatedly called the government illegitimate and unelected. Besides, he remarked that the Awami League was against Bangabandhu’s ideology and described the activists of Chhatra League as disgraceful. He also smeared the government’s image by saying it was a slave to foreign countries.”

Nur’s false statements have caused riots in different parts of the country, Rubel claimed.

“Moreover, he presented a false defamatory statement by saying I, the plaintiff of the case, am a drug addict and a phensedyl trader,” the Chhatra League leader said.

“I demand Nur’s arrest and an exemplary punishment,” he added.
