Death of pregnant woman: Gonoshasthaya founder Dr Zafrullah, 4 others sued

Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury and four others have been sued over the death of a pregnant woman at Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital.

SA Alam Sabuj, victim Nasrin Akter's husband, filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury today, Zahir Uddin, bench assistant of the concerned court, told The Daily Star.

The magistrate took the case into cognizance and recorded the complainant's statement in the case.

The court also directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the matter and submit a probe to it by January 21 next year.

Dr Nasrin, Dr Shawkat Ali Arman, Dr Delowar Hossain and nurse Shangkari Rani Sarkar, who serve at Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital, were also made the accused in the case.

According to the case document, on September 24, Nasrin Akter, who was pregnant at the time, died at Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital due to negligence of Dr Nasrin, Dr Delowar, and nurse Shangkari Rani Sarkar, while giving birth.

The hospital authorities also admitted their negligence and told the victim's family that they would negotiate but did not do so, the case statement added.

On December 17, the victim's family went to Dhanmondi Police Station to file a case in this regard. Police suggested they file a case with the court, the complainant stated in the case documents.
