10 injured as clash erupts centring patient's death at Jamalpur General Hospital

In a chase-counter chase at Jamalpur General Hospital centring the death of a patient, 10 people were injured including relatives, doctors, and Awami League leaders.

Eight people including intern doctors were detained by police at the time.

On Friday noon, a woman named Karimonnesa, 55, was injured after she fell from the second floor of Iqbalpur Ahl-e-Hadith Jame Masjid in the municipal town.

Injured Karimon was rushed to Jamalpur General Hospital by her relatives where the doctors on duty at the emergency department gave primary treatment and admitted her into a ward.

The injured patient was taken to the women's ward there but due to lack of oxygen supply she was brought back to the emergency department on the ground floor.

However, this time the doctor on duty at the emergency department delayed coming to the patient and Karimonnesa died.

The relatives of the deceased got into an altercation with the doctor and at one point vandalized the furniture at the hospital.

At least 10 people were injured including the doctor on duty Chiranjeev Sarkar, the deceased’s son-in-law Saidur Rahman, aged around 43, his son Nihad, 17, and Shahidul Islam, 42, son of late Abdur Rahim.

The deceased Karimonnesa was the wife of Mohammad Ali, a resident of Iqbalpur area of the municipal town.

Upon receiving the news of the incident, the police of Jamalpur Sadar police station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Later, when the situation calmed down, the police handed over the body to the relatives.

On the way home with the body, the intern doctors attacked them and injured Karimonnesa’s son-in-law Saidur Rahman, who is the manager of Madarganj Municipality Mayor Mirza Golam Kibria and a former organizing secretary of the ward Awami League.

They also vandalized a motorcycle belonging to Saidur.
Police arrested eight people from the spot including one doctor and intern doctors.

Additional police have been deployed at the hospital premises to control the situation.

Saidur Rahman said the patient died due to lack of oxygen in the hospital and negligence and irresponsibility of duty doctors.

He further complained: “When we were returning home with the body after the mediation of the police, the intern doctors attacked me and injured me and vandalized my motorcycle. I demand justice.”

Chiranjeev Sarkar, the doctor on duty in the emergency department, said: “The patient was admitted after she was given primary treatment. Due to the patient’s condition deteriorating I informed them that they might have to take her to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

“However, they took the patient to the female ward which does not have oxygen supply. The relatives brought the patient down again and started a commotion. Later I went out to treat the patient.

“At that time, the relatives of the patient vandalized the furniture of the emergency department and assaulted me too,” he added.

Officer-in-Charge of Jamalpur Sadar police station Md Rezaul Karim Khan confirmed the incident and said, centering the death of the patient, a chase-counter chase occurred between doctors and relatives of the deceased.
