Online admission of govt schools postponed following HC order

The Bangladesh government on Tuesday postponed the online lottery procedure for admitting students from Class I to Class IX, scheduled for December 30, after a high court division bench suspended the government order of not admitting students under 11 years in Class VI.

Issuing a circular on Tuesday, directorate of secondary and higher education director general Syed Md Golam Faruk said that the scheduled online lottery was cancelled until passing of the next order following the high court division order.

Earlier, in an online press briefing, education minister Dipu Moni ordered DSHE director general to look into the matter.

‘Student life of our children cannot be hampered for any reason,’ she said after the press and addressed the matter that a high court division bench had ordered the government to allow admission of the under 11 years old students in Class VI.

The HC bench of justice JBM Hassan and justice Md Khairu Alam on Tuesday passed the order following a writ petition, filed by a parent seeking directive after his daughter was denied to apply for admission in Class VI because of the age limit set by the government.

The high court bench also issued a rule asking the government to explain within four weeks why the education ministry’s decision of not allowing students under 11-yaer to take admission in Class VI would not be declared illegal.

The court further ordered the government to extend the online admission process of the government schools for seven days.

DSHE director general Golam Faruk said that age-limit was set for admission in different classes following the education ministry’s order passed in 2017.

Parents have complained that many students could not apply for the online admissions for setting age-bar.

Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, the government decided to hold the online lottery for admissions from Class I to Class IX at the 683 government schools across the country centrally on December 30.

The applicants were asked to submit online applications in December 15-27.
