COVID-19 kills 17 more, 990 infected in Bangladesh

COVID-19 killed 17 more people while 990 more tested positive for the novel coronavirus across the country in the past 24-hour period ending at 8:00am Friday.

With the figures, the country’s COVID-19 death toll has reached 7,576 and the number of cases 5,14,500, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.

Bangladesh on March 8 confirmed its first three cases of COVID-19 and on March 18 its first death from the disease.

The country is now in the 43rd week of its coronavirus outbreak.

According to the DGHS daily update on Friday, 12,103 samples were tested across the country in the past 24 hours and 8.18 per cent of them were found COVID-19 positive.

The country’s overall test positivity rate is now 15.88 per cent and the overall fatality rate is 1.47 per cent.

The test positivity rate has dropped recently to 7-8 per cent while the fatality rate has gone above 2 per cent over the same time.

Among the 17 new deaths, one was at home.

Since mid-May, 738 COVID-19 patients have died outside hospitals, including 704 at home and 34 on the way to hospitals, according to DGHS-compiled data.

Among the new deaths, 12 were in Dhaka division, two each in Chattogram and Khulna and one was in Rangpur division.

Twelve of the dead were aged above 60 years while four were between 51and 60 years and one was between 41 and 50 years.

So far, 4,58,656 COVID-19 patients have recovered in the country, including 1,197 in the past 24 hours.

On Friday, the number of active cases was 48,268.
