Man kills wife, daughter for drug money

A husband has allegedly strangled his sleeping wife and daughter to death in Puthia, Rajshahi.

Upon receiving the news, police recovered the bodies of the deceased from the spot. They also detained the husband Firoz Hossain, 35, from Dhaka.

The incident took place at Gopalhati village of the upazila around 11pm on Monday. The deceased was identified as Firoz's wife Polly Khatun, 25, and their five-month-old daughter Tuktuki.

Arrested Firoz Hossain is the son of Hasib Ali of the village.

Neighbor Farooq Hossain said Firoz had lost a leg in an accident while working as a bus supervisor. After recovering, he bought a charger van and earned by driving that. At one point he became addicted to drugs and even sold the van to get money for drugs.

When his wife protested the incident, a quarrel broke out between them. He would frequently torture her for money and sell anything he could get his hands on.

The recurring conflicts led to Firoz suffocating his wife and daughter to death in the dead of night.

Puthia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rezaul Islam confirmed the matter and said: “We came to the scene at night immediately after hearing about the incident. We recovered the dead bodies and took them to the police station.

“Victim’s husband Firoz fled to Dhaka that night after the incident. We found him and arrested him from Dhaka using technology.

“However, no case has been registered with the police station yet. The victim's family members are preparing to file a case,” he added.

Quoting family members he said, like always Firoz went to sleep along with his wife and two children after having dinner. His son started crying around 1am when his father and mother went to see what happened and found poly and Tuktuki dead.

"Initially, we are speculating that the victims were killed by suffocation. However, the body has been sent to the morgue of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for autopsy and the autopsy report will reveal the truth,” said OC Rezaul.
