Four people, including a couple, were killed and 20 were injured in a fire at a colony in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur early today.
The deceased are Milon (37) and his wife Munni (30), Forhad (40) and Auwal (20).
Over 50 dwellings were also gutted in the fire that originated at Kalampur Nobboi colony around 5:30am, quoting station officer of Kaliakoir fire service, Kabirul Alam.
Workers of garment factories rent houses in the colony, he said.
Soon after receiving the information, three firefighting units rushed to the spot and put out the blaze after an hour of frantic efforts, Alam said.
They rescued the injured and sent them to different clinics and hospitals, he said.
Fire fighters suspect that gas cylinder explosion might be a reason behind the fire but they are not confirmed yet, Alam said.
The extent of damage caused by the fire is still unknown.
