Nationwide COVID-19 vaccination to start February first week

Director general of Directorate General of Health Services of Bangladesh ABM Khurshid Alam said on Monday that nationwide COVID-19 vaccination would start from first week of February.

Speaking at a press conference, he also informed that the registration for COVID-19 vaccination would begin on January 26.

Earlier in the day, Beximco Pharmaceuticals Limited confirmed that 50 lakh units COVID-19 vaccine developed by Oxford-Astrazeneca and produced by Serum Institute of India COVID-19 vaccine would arrive in Bangladesh between January 21 to 25.

Serum’s local vendor Beximco’s chief operating officer Rabbur Reza confirmed the matter.

The vaccine units will be stored at Beximco facilities after arrival. Later, the doses will be sent to EPI centre, he said.

Earlier on January 4, health minister Zahid Maleque said that the Bangladesh government was expecting the Indian government’s ban on the export of COVID-19 vaccine by the Serum Institute of India would not hamper the tripartite agreement with Bangladesh.

The government has a contract with Serum Institute of India to procure three crore doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine through its local vendor Beximco Pharmaceuticals for 1.5 crore people.
