First Bangladesh Navy chief Nurul Haque dies

Retired captain Nurul Haque, the first chief of Bangladesh Navy, died of old age complications in the capital’s Combined Military Hospital on Monday night. He was 86.

An Inter-Services Public Relations press release confirmed the matter.

Nurul Haque had been suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes for a long time.

His namaz-e-janaza was held at Naval Headquarters Mosque after zuhr prayers on Tuesday. He was buried at the Banani Military Cemetery.

Nurul Haque was born on January 12, 1936 in Dhaka. He took part in the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971 and led the newly-formed navy.

After the independence, he was chief of Naval Staff from April 7, 1972 to November 6, 1973.

Nurul Haque was a senior engineer officer in the warships of the then Pakistan Navy, an engineer officer in the destroyer ship, a base engineer officer and a staff officer in the training school.
