Kurigram shivers as mercury falls to 5.5C

A severe cold wave has been sweeping over Kurigram and Rajshahi districts as lowest temperature in the country was recorded at 5.5 degrees Celsius at Rejarhat.

The cold spree has already started to disrupt life in Kurigram, adding to the woes of poor people.

“Ridge of Sub-continental high extends up to West Bengal and adjoining northwestern part Bangladesh. Seasonal low lies over South Bay,” said a bulletin from Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Sunday morning.

For the last couple of days, Kurigram has been experiencing a mild cold wave.

A mild to moderate cold wave is sweeping over Mymensingh division and elsewhere over Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions and the regions of Tangail, Faridpur, Madaripur, Gopalgonj, Nikli, Srimangal, Khulna, Jashore, Chuadanga, Kushtia, Barishal and Bhola.

It may continue, the bulletin said.

Weather may remain dry over the country and moderate to thick fog may occur during midnight to morning.

Night temperature may fall slightly over Chattogram and Barishal divisions and it may remain nearly unchanged elsewhere over the country.

Day temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country.

Meanwhile, Kurigram Agricultural Meteorological Observatory said a cold wave sweeping over the district may persist for a few more days.

Visibility became poor forcing vehicles to keep their headlights on in day time.

Kurigram Civil Surgeon Dr Habibur Rahman, said 61 people got admitted to different hospital after being affected by cold-related disease including pneumonia in the last 24 hours.
