2 suspected Rohingya drug dealers killed in Bandarban 'gunfight'

Two suspected Rohingya drug dealers have been killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban.

The incident took place in the Gorjonbunia Chakmapara area near Bangladesh-Myanmar border on Sunday night.

The BGB personnel also recovered 100,000 yaba tablets, two guns, and four bullets from the spot.

The deceased are Jobayer, 28, a resident of Block D/2 of Kutupalong No 1 Rohingya camp, and Dil Mohammad, 25, of Block B/3 of Lombashia No 2 camp under Ukhiya upazila in Cox's Bazar.

Acting on a tip-off that a group of drug dealers would smuggle a big consignment of yaba tablets into Bangladesh from Myanmar through the border area, two patrol teams of Rejupara border outpost took position in the Gorjonbunia Chakmapara area, said a press release signed by Assistant Director Md Yar Hossain of BGB Battalion 34 in Cox's Bazar.

As BGB personnel challenged a group of five to six people around 11:30pm, they opened fire on the law enforcers.

The BGB men also retaliated with fire for self-defence, triggering a gunfight.

At one stage, the drug dealers retreated from the scene and the border guard personnel found the duo lying on the spot with bullet wounds.

They were taken to Ukhiya Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty physician declared them dead, BGB said.

However, BGB claimed two of their members were injured in the gunfight and they also took primary treatment at the health complex.

The bodies were sent to Cox's Bazar General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
