The High Court has held Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus in contempt and ordered him to appear before it to give an explanation for failing to comply with a previous order.
The virtual bench of Justice Mubibur Rahman Miah and Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Molla on Thursday asked Yunus to appear before it on March 16, reports Bangla Tribune.
Yunus, also the founder of Grameen Telecom, was accused of sacking 100 workers without having any discussion with the organisation’s Collective Bargaining Agent (CBA) leaders.
They were terminated reportedly through a single notice signed by Grameen Telecom Managing Director Md Ashrarful Hasan.
Later on, the decision was challenged at the High Court, which ordered the reappointment of the workers.
Grameen Telecom CBA leader Kamruzzaman filed the petition on the charge of contempt against Yunus as he had not complied with the court order by reinstating the jobs.
During Thursday’s hearing, advocate Yousuf Ali represented Kamruzzaman.
In 2016, some 14 former employees had sued Grameen Telecom for not paying them arrears. Later on, another 93 cases were filed against Yunus on the same grounds.
Later, a total of 107 lawsuits were lodged against Yunus at the Labour Court in Dhaka.
