Students of Jahangirnagar University today broke open the locks on doors of at least six halls to press home their demands, including reopening of the halls, which have been closed during the pandemic.
Over 400 students gathered in front of the university's Shaheed Minar area and took position in front of the vice chancellor's residence around 11:00am.
During a negotiation with the authorities, they placed some demands that include reopening of the halls and closure of a road that linked the campus to the locality amid security concern following yesterday's clash between JU students and villagers in Savar's Gerua Bazar.
They also demanded the university authorities to take legal action over the clash.
The authorities assured them of meeting all the demands, except reopening of the halls.
After being refused around noon, the students first broke open the lock of Al Beruni Hall and then Fazilatunnesa, Nawab Faizunnesa, Khaleda Zia, Sheikh Hasina and Pritilata halls one by one.
They gathered in front of Sufia Kamal Hall when the report was filed at 1:10pm.
Talking to media, ASM Firoz Ul Hasan, acting proctor of JU, said, "We agreed with all the demands of the students."
But reopening of the halls depends on government decision, he said.
At least 30 students were injured in clashes between JU students and villagers in Savar's Gerua Bazar yesterday evening.
Sources said the clash broke out in the evening over a cricket match.
Following the incident, some students fled their messes fearing attacks.
