JU asks students to vacate hall

The authorities of Jahangirnagar University on Sunday night asked the students, who were ‘illegally’ staying at the residential halls, to vacate the halls by 10:00am Monday.

The authorities have issued the order through a notice signed by the university’s acting registrar Rahima Kaneez on the day.

Terming the students staying as ‘illegal’, the authorities have taken the decision in line of the government decision to keep the university campus shut amid COVID-19 pandemic, according to the notice.

The authorities will have to take legal action if anyone tries to forcibly stay and refuses to leave from the dormitory, the statement reads.

However, several protesting students who have earlier taken position inside the dormitories vowed to continue demonstrations in this regard and stay at the halls.

Earlier on February 19, agitating students broke into residential halls following an alleged attack on students by some villagers adjacent to the campus.

However, the university authorities locked all the eight female halls within three hours of breaking open the gates by students at about 2:00pm on Saturday.

Female students vowed to break into the halls Monday noon if the university authorities failed to make a decision on hall reopening.
