Fearing deterioration of law and order, the administration of Companiganj upazila has imposed Section 144 in Basurhat municipality for 12 hours, banning meetings and public gatherings.
The Section 144 will remain in force from 6am to 6pm on Monday.
The section was slapped as two feuding groups of the ruling Awami League declared programs simultaneously in the area on Monday.
Abdul Quader Mirza, Basurhat municipality mayor and younger brother of Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, convened a condolence meeting at 2:30pm at Rupali Chattar in the municipality in connection with the death of the journalist Borhan Uddin Muzakkir.
Another faction led by Mizanur Rahman Badal, former chairman of Companiganj upazila parishad and incumbent organizing secretary of the upazila unit Awami League, called a protest rally at 3pm at the same venue.
However, Mirza protested against the decision of the local administration.
During a Facebook live on Sunday night, he alleged that the local administration slapped the section to foil his program.
Mirza also asked his followers to stay alert.
Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune on Monday morning, Noakhali Deputy Commissioner Khorshed Alam Khan said no untoward incident happened following the imposition of Section 144.
Meanwhile, journalist Borhan Uddin Muzakkir, 25, was laid to rest at his family graveyard in Companiganj on Sunday night.
Muzakkir, who was the Companiganj correspondent of the daily Bangladesh Samachar, received bullet wounds during a clash between supporters of Abdul Quader Mirza and Mizanur Rahman Badal in the upazila on Friday.
He died while undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Saturday night.
