DGHS driver Malek indicted in arms case

A Dhaka court has framed charges against a driver of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) for his alleged involvement in dealing illegal firearms and ammunition.

Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Dhaka Special Tribunal 1 indicted the accused, Abdul Malek, on Thursday after rejecting his discharge petition in the case.

The court also set April 5 for recording deposition of witnesses in the case.

Earlier, the prosecution read out the charges and asked the accused whether he is guilty or not. Malek pleaded not guilty and prayed for justice.

On January 10, Turag police station Sub-Inspector Rubel Sheikh, investigating officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet against the accused to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka, citing 11 people as prosecution witnesses..gif

On February 14, Judge Emrul Kayesh accepted the charge sheet in presence of the accused.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Malek in Dhaka's Kamarpara area on September 20 last year for his alleged involvement in various criminal activities.

They recovered a foreign made pistol, a magazine, five bullets, and counterfeit notes worth Tk1.50 lakh, a laptop, and a mobile phone from his possession.

A Class III employee, Malek accumulated wealth worth crores of taka by resorting to illegal means, RAB said.

Later, the elite police unit filed two cases against Malek with Turag police station, under the Firearms Act and the Special Powers Act.
