Garment workers vandalize, torch vehicles in Ashulia as road accident kills one

Workers have vandalized 10 to 12 vehicles and torched three buses protesting against the death of a garment factory official in a road accident in Ashulia.

The accident took place on Baipail-Abdullahpur road in the Narasinghapur area on Thursday night.

The victim, who could not be identified immediately, worked as an admin officer at Sharmin Group.

Police and locals said a bus of Ashulia Classic Paribahan ran over the man around 8pm when he was crossing the road after getting out of the factory.

He was rushed to a local hospital where the on-duty physician declared him dead.

As the news of death spread around, agitated workers of Sharmin Group and other factories blocked the road, vandalized and set fire on vehicles.

Later, members of the Fire Service and Civil Defence put out the fire of the vehicles.

Ashulia police station Inspector (Operations) Abdur Rashid said police reached the spot being informed about the workers' agitation.

The law enforcers pacified the crowd and cleared the road for traffic movement around 9:30pm, he added.
