Dr Yunus exempted from personal appearance before court

The High Court on Tuesday exempted Nobel Laureate and chairman of Grameen Communications Dr Muhammad Yunus and its vice chairman Ashraful Hasan from personal appearance before the court in connection with a contempt of court rule.

The bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Md Kamrul Islam Mollah passed the order and fixed April 22 for the next hearing on the rule.

Earlier, Yunus and Ashraful virtually appeared before the court.

The HC on February 18 summoned Yunus and Ashraful to virtually appear before the court to explain why they failed to reinstate 38 employees in the organisation as per the court’s previous order.

Advocate Rokanuddin Mahmud and Mostafizur Rahman stood for Grameen Telecom while deputy attorney general Nowroz Md Rasel Chowdhury represented the state and advocate Yusuf Ali and Ujjal Hossain moved for the petitioner.

Advocate Rokanuddin Mahmud and Mostafizur Rahman told the HC that employees were not terminated from the organisation and are still getting service related benefits.

‘Moreover, the organisation offers unconditional apology if anything happened entirely unintentionally,’ the lawyers said.

Md Kamruzzaman, one of the 38 terminated employees, filed the contempt of court petition on February 18 while the HC issued the rule and summoned the duo.
