Clash triggered at Motijheel as police foil anti-Modi procession

A clash broke out in the capital’s Motijheel area on Thursday morning after a team of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police foiled a protest procession brought out by Bangladesh Chhatra and Juba Adhikar Parishad against the upcoming visit of Indian prime minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh.

A number of protesters, New Age proto-journalist Abdullah Apu, and some policemen, including Paltan police officer-in-charge Abu Bakar Siddique, were injured in the clash that took place at about 11:30am.

The clash took place as a team of Paltan police, led by Abu Bakar, attacked the procession of the protesters which was parading busy streets in the area.

A group of the protesters beat OC Abu Bakar. Later, he was rescued by people handed over to his colleagues.

Following the incident, police fired tire gas and bullets to disperse the protesters.

Protesters set fire to a roadside furniture used by hawkers for selling their products.

After several gunshots, the police started detaining people.

Additional police were deployed in the area to avoid further untoward situation.
