The government has deployed the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in parts of Bangladesh amid Hefazat-e-Islam’s call for protests following clashes with the police over Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on Friday.
BGB personnel were deployed in several districts including Dhaka following the Home Ministry’s orders on Friday night.
“The troops will work on the ground with other forces to maintain law and order,” confirmed Lt Col Faizur Rahman, director (operations) of BGB, reports Bangla Tribune.
Earlier on Friday, the hard-line Islamist group called dawn to dusk hartal across the country for Sunday and announced a countrywide protest for Saturday to protest the death of its members.
A group of hardliners clashed with the police during protests against Modi’s visit outside the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka. The clashes left a number of people, including journalists, injured.
In response, Hefazat activists attacked a police station and two other government offices in Chittagong during which four people died in clashes with the law enforcers.
After the Hefazat mayhem in Chittagong, another man was killed during a clash between Qawmi madrasa students and police in Brahmanbaria. The protesters carried out arson attacks and vandalism at the railway station and other establishments.
