200 sued over Hefazat mayhem in Sylhet

A case has been filed against at least 200 leaders and activists of Jamaat, Shibir and Hefazat in connection with the clashes in Sylhet during the countrywide hartal on Sunday.

Mostafizur Rahman, in-charge (SI) of Bandarbazar outpost in Kotwali filed the case on Sunday night.

In the case, police named 16 people including the five suspects previously arrested over the incident among at least 200 unnamed others, confirmed Sylhet Kotwali Model police station OC Abu Farhad Khan.

He said the charges included obstruction of police duties and assault on police personnel.

The morning-evening hartal called by Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh was also observed in Sylhet as part of the central program of the anti-Modi movement and Hefazat leaders and activists took to the streets of Sylhet on Sunday morning.

They picketed at important points of Sylhet city by burning tires. Leaders and activists of the organization blockaded several points in Sylhet. In addition, they blocked the city roads and highways by laying brick chips and electric poles on them.

Awami League and its affiliated organizations took out an anti-hartal procession in the afternoon. Leaders and activists of Awami League and its affiliates marched from Chauhatta Point to City Point.

When the Shibir leaders and activists came with slogans, the Chhatra League chased them. The clash erupted when the Chhatra League chased the Shibir leaders and activists at City Point.

At this time, police arrested 5 Shibir activists.
