Hefazat mayhem: Over 3,000 sued in six cases in Narayanganj

Over 3,000 people have been sued over the series of violent protests carried out by Hefazat-e-Islam in Narayanganj.

On Monday, six cases – five by the police and one by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) – were started with Siddhirganj police station over attack on law enforcers and arson of vehicles on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway during Hefazat’s hartal.

“Charges of assaulting law enforcers, obstruction of police duty, and arson have been brought in the cases filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act,” Siddhirganj police OC Moshiur Rahman told Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday.

A total of 136 people have been named in the cases who are affiliated with the local Jamaat-e-Islami, Hefazat and BNP, he said before adding: “However, we are yet to make any arrest.”

On Sunday, police in Narayanganj’s Rupganj arrested four leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal, and Swechhasebak Dal for vandalizing a truck on the hartal day.

The are Sohail Rana, 40, Sohail Bhuiyan alias Babu, 34, Milon Mollah and Rafiq Hossain, 19.

A case was filed over the incident by Rupganj police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Mobarak Hossian.

On Friday, a group of Hefazat-e-Islam hardliners clashed with the police during protests against Modi’s visit outside the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka.

The clash soon spread like wildfire across the country which left hundreds of people, including journalists and law enforcers, injured and scores killed as well government and private properties were damaged.

The same day, the Islamist group called dawn to dusk hartal across the country for Sunday and announced a countrywide protest for Saturday for the deaths of its members.

Total 14 Hefazat men – 10 in Brahmanbaria and four in Chittagong – have died in the ensuing clashes with the law enforcement officials since Friday.
