Hefajat leader Muhammad Waqqas dies of Covid-19

Mufti Muhammad Waqqas, a member of the central advisory council of Hefajat-e Islam and president of a faction of Jamiat Ulamaye Islam, died of Covid-19 at a Dhaka hospital today. He was 74.

Jamiat Ulamaye Islam is a component of the BNP-led 20-party alliance.

Waqqas, a three-time lawmaker, was admitted to Sheikh Russel Gastroliver Institute and Hospital in Mohakhali with coronavirus infection, said Hefajat's nayeb-e-amir Maulana Zafrullah Khan.

He died at around 4:30 am today, the Hefajat leader told.

His namaz-e-janaza will be held after Zohr prayer at Jamia Emdadia Madaninagar Madrasa in Monirampur upazila of Jashore. He was the principal of the madrasa.

During the Ershad government, he was the Minister of State for Religion.
