Large dead whale found in Cox’s Bazar beach

A large dead whale was found at Himchari beach on the shore of the Bay of Bengal adjacent to Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf marine drive road Friday morning.

Humayun Kabir, divisional forest officer of Cox’s Bazar (South), told New Age that it was a rare sight at Cox’s Bazar beach.

‘The whale is 35 feet long. It is decomposed so its original breath cannot be known,’ he said.

‘Forest officials, upazila nirbahi officer Ramu, veterinary surgeon, and Cox’s Bazar district officials are on the spot,’ he added.

‘We have asked for a veterinary surgeon from the wildlife and nature conservation division to determine the cause of death,’ he added.

The species of the whale is yet to be known, he added.

Mohammed Nurul Absar Khan, dean of Faculty of Fisheries at the Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, told New Age that the tide washed the whale ashore at Himchari beach on Friday morning.

‘The whale lost his group in the deep sea and came to the shallow Bay of Bengal and died,’ he added.

Meanwhile, in 1991-92 two large whales were found dead in Cox’s Bazar beach near Laboni point and Motel Shaybal point.
