Bangladesh has again registered over 7,000 Covid-19 cases after going down for a day, as the recent surge of the deadly coronavirus continues in the country.
As many as 7,462 people tested positive in the 24 hours till Friday morning, taking the total number of infections to 673,594.
The country also witnessed 63 deaths in the past 24 hours, according to the daily virus update released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Friday afternoon. The total number of Covid-19 fatalities in the country now stands at 9,584.
Health authorities on Wednesday recorded the highest number of new Covid-19 cases (7,626) in a single day since the pandemic made landfall in the country in March last year. However, the number dropped to 6,854 on Thursday.
On Thursday, Bangladesh also recorded the highest number of single day Covid-19 deaths, with 74 people dying of the deadly disease in 24 hours.
Of the 63 deceased on Friday, including 43 men and 20 women, 42 were from Dhaka division, 10 from Chittagong, four from Barisal, three from Khulna, two from Rajshahi, and one each from Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions.
All of them died in different hospitals across the country.
So far, 7,173 men (74.84%) and 2,411 women (25.16%) have died from Covid-19 in the country.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.42%.

As many as 31,654 samples were tested in 243 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. The latest figures show an infection rate of 23.57%.
A total of 4,947,412 samples have been tested in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 13.62% so far.
Amid the backdrop of a resurgence of Covid-19 deaths and cases, Bangladesh will go into a week-long hard lockdown starting from April 14, aimed at curbing Covid-19 transmission, since the existing lockdown has proven to be ineffective to restrict public movement.
The DGHS said 3,511 people had recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 568,541 patients – 84.40% – have made full recovery across the country.
On March 8 last year, the health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain named Sars-CoV-2. The country recorded its first fatality on March 18.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast-spreading coronavirus had claimed more than 2,917,995 lives and infected at least 134,641,198 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 108,415,236 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 219 countries and territories across the planet.
