SC clears way for Irfan’s release in Navy officer assault case

The Appellate Division on Sunday cleared the way to release Md Irfan Salim, detained son of Awami League lawmaker for Dhaka-7 Haji Salim, from the jail.

The six-member full bench chaired by chief justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order dismissing a government appeal against his bail granted by the High Court in a case of assaulting a Navy officer on October 25, 2020.

The vacation chamber judge Obaidur Hassan on March 28 stayed Irfan’s bail for four weeks after hearing a government appeal against the High Court decision given on March 18.

The Rapid Action Battalion arrested Irfan at the house of his father at Lalbagh on October 28, 2020.

Later, on the day, he was shown arrested in the case of assaulting Navy Lieutenant Wasif Ahmed Khan in front of his wife on October 25, 2020.

Wasif was assaulted near the Kalabagan crossing in the capital while Wasif and his wife were on a motorbike on their way to home in the cantonment area from Nilkhet in Dhaka.

On October 26, 2020, Wasif filed a case against Irfan and four of his associates for assaulting him after Salim’s car had hit the Navy officer’s motorbike.
