Hefazat leader Mamunul placed on 7-day fresh remand

A Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Monday placed Hefajat-e-Islam Bangladesh leader Mamunul Haque on a fresh remand for seven days in police custody for interrogation in two cases filed with Paltan and Matijheel police stations.

Of the seven days, the court allowed a four-day remand in the case filed with Paltan Police Station over violence in late March and a three-day remand in the case filed with Matijheel police station over Shapla Chattar violence in May 2013, court officials said.

Metropolitan magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury passed the order after the police sought 10-day remand in each of the cases after producing him before the court.

He was produced before the court on completion of a seven-day remand in a case filed with Mohammadpur police station for his involvement in violent activities during Hefazat’s protests against India’s prime minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh in March, 2021.

He was produced before the court amid tight security in and around the court premises.

From the court, Mamunul was taken to DB office at Minto Road.

On April 18, a joint team of Tejgaon Division police and Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch arrested Mamunul at Jamia Rahmania Arabia Madrassah in Mohammadpur in Dhaka.
