Two cases filed against Junayed Babunagari over Ctg violence

Police in Chattogram on Thursday filed two cases against Hefajat-e-Islam's Chief and current Convener of the new committee Junayed Babunagari in connection with the recent violence in Hathazari upazila of Chattogram during the recent visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bangladesh.

Police filed the cases accusing Babunagari and other top Hefajat, BNP and Jamaat leaders at the Hathazari Police Station according to police sources.

The news of the cases became public today.

When asked about the delay in filing of the cases, Chattogram Superintendent of Police SM Rashidul Haque said, "Police have taken time to verify the identity and addresses of the accused and later filed the cases.

Babunagari and other Hefajat leaders were sued for attacking policemen, vandalising police stations and on other charges and the cases were lodged under Special Powers Act, Anti-Terrorism Act and Penal Code."

"No Hefajat leaders were arrested so far in the cases," added the SP.

With these two at least nine cases have been filed with Hathazari Police Station over the Hefajat mayhem.

Police sources said a constable named Solaiman, who was picked up by Hefajat men while on-duty on March 26 at Hathazari, filed a case accusing Babunagari, Hefajat leaders- Mir Idris, Nasir Uddin, Jakaria Nomani and 200 other unnamed persons.

Inspector Amir Hossain, of Hathazari Police Station, filed another case against 74 persons including Babunagari, Hathazari's Jamaat ameer and 3000 unnamed persons.
