Kuwait court extends imprisonment of ex-MP Papul to 7 years

Kuwait's Appeal Court has extended the imprisonment of former Bangladeshi MP Mohammad Shahid Islam alias Kazi Papul and two Kuwaitis to seven years from four years.

The others whose imprisonment were also increased include Kuwait's interior ministry's Assistant Under-Secretary Maj Gen Mazen Al-Jarrah and former MP candidate Salah Khorshid, reported Kuwaiti newspaper, Al-Qabas.

The court, however, acquitted Kuwaiti MP Saadoun Hammad in its verdict delivered today.

Earlier on January 28, Kuwait's criminal court imprisoned for four years the former Bangladeshi MP, around eight months after Kuwait's Criminal Investigation Department arrested Papul, the managing director and CEO of Marafie Kuwaitia Group.

The independent lawmaker from Lakshmipur-2 was also fined 1.97 million Kuwaiti dinars (Tk 55 crore) by the court in the bribery case. Consequently, his membership of the National Parliament was cancelled.

It could not be known if Papul's fine was increased or decreased by the appeal court.

He was accused of human trafficking, money laundering and bribing Kuwaiti officials with millions of dollars to recruit Bangladeshi workers and get contracts for his company, labour exploitation and also violation of the residence law.
