Munia buried next to parent’s graves, family demands justice

College student Mosarat Jahan Munia, 21, whose body was recovered from a luxurious flat in Dhaka's Gulshan, has been buried next to her parents' grave.

Her last rites were held at Tomsom Bridge Cemetery in Comilla on Tuesday evening.

Munia was the daughter of heroic freedom fighter Shafiqur Rahman, a resident of Manoharpur area of Comilla city.

She was a second-year student and HSC exam candidate at Mirpur Cantonment Public School and College.

Her sister Nusrat Jahan discovered her hanging body at the apartment and informed police. Later, police recovered her body from a building on Road No 120 in Gulshan 2 on Monday evening.

The news of the incident went viral on social media and caused a stir across the country, including Comilla.

Nusrat filed a case with Gulshan police station, accusing Bashundhara Group Managing Director (MD) Sayem Sobhan Anvir, who had rented the flat for her, of abetting the suicide.

The sister Nusrat broke down in tears while talking to reporters at their residence in Bagichagaon area of Comilla on Tuesday after returning from Dhaka.

"Munia has been in a relationship with Bashundhara managing director Sayem Sobhan Anvir for two years ago. A lot has happened between them since then.

“Munia has been upset for the last few days. She had asked Anvir to marry her and they got into an altercation regarding that.”

She continued: “Munia called yesterday and said ‘he will kill me. I was deceived, I was deceived. Please come to Dhaka soon, I am in great danger. Something could happen to me at any time.’

“I left for Dhaka and called her many times, but she did not pick up the phone anymore. I went to Munia’s house and knocked on the door but she did not open it. After the landlord broke the lock I found her hanging from the ceiling.”

Police also found CCTV footage of Anvir coming to the house, she added.

Munia's elder brother Ashikur Rahman Sabuj told reporters: "My sister Munia is not a girl to commit suicide. We think it's premeditated murder.”

He also said: “I would like to convey to the honourable prime minister, we are the children of a middle-class family. My father is a freedom fighter. He supported Awami League with Bangabandhu's ideology in his heart till death. Our earnest appeal to the prime minister is for exemplary punishment of those involved in this planned murder.”
