Sundarbans fire under control; probe body formed

The fire that broke out in Daser Vharani area under Sharankhola Range of Sundarbans East Forest Division has been brought under control but it is not doused yet.

"Some vegetation are still burning," said Mohammad Belayet Hossain, divisional forest officer (DFO) of Sundarbans East Forest Division.

"There has been no major damage. Fire extinguishing operations were suspended last night. Forest workers and fire service resumed operation in the morning," the official said.

Forest Department formed a three-member investigation committee last evening to identify the cause of fire and asked to submit its report within the next seven days, the DFO said.

The committee is being headed by Joynal Abedin, assistant forest conservator, Sharankhola Range, Sundarbans East Forest Division.

The other members of the committee are Sharankhola Station Officer Abdul Mannan and Dhansagar Station Officer Md Faridul Islam, reports our Bagerhat correspondent.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense Station Bagerhat, Golam Sarwar, said that the spot is about 6 to 7 km off the locality.

He said the fire could not be doused yet as there are piles of dry leaves. Moreover, there is no source of water nearby, the fire station official said.

"We have installed four and a half km pipes to supply water for putting out the blaze. Our three units have resumed work since dawn," he said.

"Hopefully it will be possible to douse the fire today," the official said.
