Man held for verbally abusing, hitting rickshaw puller in city

Police detained a man who assaulted a rickshaw puller in Dhaka's Bangshal area this afternoon.

A video of the incident went viral on social media that triggered widespread criticism.

In the video, Sultan Ahmed -- a resident of the area -- who has been detained, was seen verbally abusing and hitting the rickshaw puller.

Despite being assaulted, the rickshaw puller was seemingly calm and was weeping. Yet, Sultan continued slapping him. At one stage, the rickshaw puller collapsed and lost consciousness.

Sultan then tried to pull the man, holding him by the collar, when passersby intervened and stopped him.

Shaheen Fakir, officer-in-charge of Bangshal Police Station, said as the video was doing the rounds on social media, police noticed it and detained Sultan from Bangshal area around 6:15pm.

"The incident happened around 1:30pm over a trivial matter. He [Sultan] initially regretted his conduct," the OC said.

Soon after the incident, the rickshaw puller regained consciousness and left the spot with his rickshaw, the OC said, quoting the detainee.

"We are looking for the rickshaw puller. We will take legal action against him [Sultan]," he added.
