DU student found in unconscious state dies at hospital

A Dhaka University student died after fire officials found her in unconscious state in a sublet room at government staff quarters in Palashi area and rushed her to hospital this morning.

The deceased was identified as Ishrat Jahan Tushti, 21, a second year student of English department of the university.

As the university halls remained closed due to Covid-19 pandemic, Ishrat along with three others used to live in the sublet room on the ground floor of the building.

Saiful Islam, station officer of Palashi Fire Station, said they were informed about the incident through a call at national helpline service 999 and rushed to the spot immediately.

"We broke open a bathroom door which was locked from inside and recovered the girl in unconscious state around 7:15am. She was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared her dead," he said.

Her roommates said they called 999 as the water tap in the bathroom was on but she was not responding despite repeated knocking on the door, he said.

Sumaiya Parveen, a roommate of the deceased, said hailing from Netrakona district, Ishrat was attached to Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall and used to live in room 422.

"We rented the room at the staff quarters as the halls have been closed," she said.

Ishrat had cold related problems and was feeling unwell since she along with others got drenched in the rain yesterday, Sumaiya said.

"Police are investigating the incident. We will be able to comment after investigation," Ashraf Uddin, officer-in-charge of Lalbagh Police Station, said.
