Covid-19 kills 30 more, infects 1,970

Bangladesh logged an additional 30 deaths and 1,970 new infections in the past 24 hours until 8:00am Monday.

The new figures took the overall number of Covid deaths to 12,869 and infections to 812,960.

Nineteen of the newly deceased were men while the rest were women, according to the government statistics.

The daily Covid situation update by the Directorate General of Health Services came up with the statistics.

A total of 17,169 samples have been tested in the timeline with 11.47 per cent test positivity rate.

The division of Chattogram reported the highest number of 11 deaths during the 24 hours reporting period.

A total of 1,918 people recovered from the viral disease totalling the number to 753,240.

The daily update shows that 22 of the deceased were aged above 60 years, two aged between 51 and 60 years, three each between 41 and 50 years and 31 and 40 years.

In Rajshahi, seven more people died of Covid-19 infection at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in the past 24 hours ending Monday morning, hospital authorities said.

Three of the deceased were from the bordering district of Chapainawabganj, which was put under strict lockdown since 25 May, and one each from Rajshahi, Pabna, Naogoan, and Natore districts, they said.

With the latest deaths, a total of 60 patients died at the Covid units of the hospital in the last seven days, RMCH deputy director Saiful Ferdous told.

He said that a total of 232 patients were taking at the Covid units of the hospital till Monday morning. Of them, 18 were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Meanwhile in Kushtia, the district administration imposed a 10-day restriction early Monday to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the district.

Kushtia deputy commissioner Mohammad Saidul Islam issued a public notice in this regard at around 12:00am.

According to the restrictions, the ban will remain in force in the district from Sunday midnight to June 16 midnight. The shops and shopping malls in the district can be kept opened from 10:00am to 8:00pm following strict hygiene rules.

With new variants of Covid-19 spreading rapidly, the global Covid-19 caseload on Monday crossed the grim milestone of 173 million.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the total case count and fatalities now stand at 173,197, 944 and 3,726, 107, respectively.

The US, the world's worst-hit country in terms of cases and deaths, have recorded 33,362,471 cases with 597,627 fatalities to date, as per the JHU data.

Brazil continues to rank second in the world in number of deaths from the pandemic behind the United States and third in number of confirmed cases following the United States and India.
