Only 12 per cent rural people in Bangladesh wear mask

Only 12 per cent of rural population in Bangladesh are found wearing masks in half of 600 villages covering 130,000 households, revealed a new study.

‘The situation is dire in rural Bangladesh in terms of wearing masks despite the pandemic continuing for over a year,’ said professor Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak of the Yale University, also one of the authors of the study.

The findings of the study released on May 13 were shared through a webinar organised by BIDS in the morning on Wednesday.

The study showed that through interventions, such as supplying free masks and making people understand the importance of masks, can increase the use of masks by 29 per cent.

The data for the study were collected between 2020 and this year involving 341830 adults.
