Contractors involved in local AL unit enter Pabna PWD office while openly carrying firearms

A group of contractors, who are reportedly involved in local Awami League unit and associate bodies, went to the office of Public Works Department (PWD) in Pabna while openly carrying firearms.

Journalists came across screen grabs from the CCTV footage of the PWD office six days after the incident happened on June 6.

PWD officials, however, said they have no complaint over the incident as they did not misbehave with anyone at the office.

The CCTV footage shows a group of men led by Haji Faruk, science and technology affairs secretary of Pabna Sadar upazila unit of AL; AR Khan Mamun, organising secretary of Pabna Municipality unit AL; and Sheikh Lalu, a Jubo League leader, came to Pabna PWD office while few of them were carrying firearms openly.

Talking to Haji Faruk said they did it mistakenly.

"This is licensed firearm... carrying it for the sake of security. We went to the PWD office while going to another place. There were no bad intentions," Faruk said.

PWD officials said a group of 25 to 30 people entered the office and asked about the executive engineer of the PWD, which created panic among the officials.

Talking to Md Anwarul Azim, executive engineer of PWD, Pabna said, "I was not at the office. They (contractors) just came into the office and left. They did not misbehave with anyone. It is not clear why they came." Anwarul Azim said.

Asked why they did not lodge any complaint, the executive engineer, however, said as the contractors did not do any harm, no complaint was filed.

Md Muhibul Islam, superintendent of Pabna police, said police are investigating the incident. "After investigation, we will take action," the SP added.
