Cop shots three to death in broad daylight in Kushtia

Three people, including a woman and her minor son, were shot to death as a police officer shot them one after another in broad daylight at Customs Moar area under Kushtia sadar upazila on Sunday morning.

The deceased were Asma Khatun, 35, and her son Robin, 7, of the area and Shakil Ahmed, 40, resident of village Sheota of Kumarkhali upazila in the district.

Police arrested Soumen Chandra, an assistant sub-inspector working at Phultala police station in Khulna, for killing the three, Kushtia additional superintendent of police M Mostafizur Rahman said.

Quoting local people, Kushtia police officer-in-charge Shabbirul Islam said that the assailant attacked the house of Asma at Customs Moar area and opened fire with gun at about 11:00am.

The assailant opened fire on the minor boy by chasing him, the police officer said.

The attacker tried to flee the scene but the local people caught him by throwing brick bats on him and later handed him over to the police, he said.

The local people rescued the trio, took them to Kushtia General Hospital for treatment where on the duty doctors declared Asma and Rabin dead one after another.

Later, Shakil was kept in the Intensive Care Unit where he died after about one and a half hours.

Mostafizur Rahman said that they primarily came to know that extra-marital affair was behind the incident.
