Shifting NID service from EC will make conducting polls hard: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Wednesday said that the National Identity Card services could not be moved from the Election Commission only by letter.

‘If the NID service is shifted from the Election Commission, it will be difficult to conduct elections,’ the CEC told reporters at the Nirbachon Bhavan in Agargaon.

He said that the NID service had been created only for the sake of voting.

About the Cabinet Division letter sent to the EC secretariat to transfer the NID service to home ministry, the CEC also said that the commission had not been officially informed about this.

He said that the whole issue of the NID service needed to be discussed before it could be transferred. ‘Therefore, I hope that a proposal for formal talks will be made soon,’ he added.
