HC expresses dismay over money launders' bail by lower courts

The High Court on Wednesday expressed dismay over the lower courts’ granting bails to several accused in money laundering cases in Bangladesh even though their bail prayers were earlier rejected by the High Court on various occasions.

An online bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman expressed the dismay while hearing bail prayers of Gandaria thana unit Awami league’s suspended leaders Enamul Haque Enu and his younger brother Rupon Bhuyain, now detained in several money laundering cases.

‘Try to the lower courts instead of here seeking their bails,’ Justice M Enayetur Rahim told Supreme Court lawyer Shahriar Kabir, who appeared for bails for Enamul and Rupon.

In the past week, former deputy inspector general for prisons of Chittagong range, Partha Gopal Banik, an accused in money laundering case, was freed on bail immediately after he was granted bail by a lower court despite his bail prayer was rejected by the High Court.

‘Today we came to know from a newspaper’s report that an accused of laundering Tk 12 crore was granted bail by a lower court soon after he surrendered and prayed for bail,’ the judge said.

Justice Enayetur Rahim told Anti-Corruption Commission’s lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan that the ACC was ‘still sleeping’ without filing any appeal against the bail which was granted three months ago.

The High Court, however, set July 14 for passing orders on the bail prayers of Enamul and Rupon in two cases.

The court admitted two other appeals of the two brothers seeking bail in two more cases.
