Bangladesh logs highest daily 8,822 Covid infections

Bangladesh logged the highest number of Covid cases of 8,822in the past 24 hours until 8:00am on Wednesday.

Covid-19 also claimed 115 more people in the timeline, the second highest number of deaths in a single day in the country.

With the latest tally, the death toll hits 14,503 and infections 913,258 while the test positivity rate for the past 24 hours was 25.13 per cent.

The daily Covid situation update by the Directorate General of Health Services came up with the latest statistics.

Bangladesh has been logging more than hundred daily deaths and higher number of infections from the viral disease for the past few days.

Amid the increasing trend of Covid deaths and infections, the government is going to impose strict restrictions shutting down all business activities and offices from 6:00am July 1 to July 7 to contain the spread of Covid-19.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police also warned that the police would arrest the violators of the strict restrictions imposed by the government.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Shafiqul Islam said this at a press conference on Wednesday.

All modes of public transports, road, river, rail and domestic flights will remain suspended during the period, said a circular of the Cabinet Division issued on Wednesday.

A total of 35,105 samples have been tested during the reporting period across the country. Bangladesh had tested a total of 66,08,927 samples as of June 30.

Among the deceased, 72 are male and 43 female patients.

Eighty seven of them died at public hospitals, 19 at private ones and nine died at their homes, said the government statistics.

The highest, 30, people died in Khulna division followed by 23 each in Chattogram and Rajshahi, 17 in Dhaka, 11 in Rangpur, six in Mymensingh, three in Sylhet and two in Barishal divisions.

The highest rate of infections was 39.9 per cent in Khulna division, 36.11 per cent in Barishal, 32.7 per cent Sylhet, 31.22 per cent in Rangpur, 27.32 per cent in Mymensingh, 25.47 per cent in Chattogram, 22.54 per cent in Dhaka and 20.11 per cent in Rajshahi divisions.

A total of 4,550 people recovered from the viral disease till Wednesday morning totalling the number to 816,250.

The daily update shows that 61 of the deceased were aged above 60 years, 24 aged between 51 and 60 years, 10 between 41 and 50 years, 14 between 31 and 40 years, 2 between 21 to 30 and one patient was aged between 11 and 20 years.

Bangladesh officially announced the presence of Covid-19 on March 8, 2020 while recording the first death on March 18, 2020.
