320 more arrested in Dhaka for violating Covid restrictions

The police had arrested 320 more people at different spots in the capital city of Bangladesh, Dhaka, on charges of violating Covid restrictions until Friday evening— the second day of the on-going weeklong restrictions imposed by the government to contain Covid infections.

The police on Thursday, the first day of the restrictions, arrested 550 people in the city.

With this, at least 870 restriction violators had been arrested in the past two days.

Mobile courts fined 208 more people at different points of the city, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner for media Iftekhairul Islam adding that some 68 vehicles were fined a total of Tk 1,19,900 for the violation.

Major cities, including the capital, across Bangladesh have been witnessing tougher enforcement of Covid restrictions for second consecutive day on Friday with fewer numbers of people and vehicles were spotted in the streets.

City streets were almost deserted in the morning of public holiday, however, kitchen markets were overcrowded and health guidelines were hardly followed there.

Law enforcement agencies, as well as army and Border Guard Bangladesh personnel, were seen active on the roads and even at the inner areas of the cities, including the capital, New Age correspondents reported.

Ferries on the major water channels were found to transport only vehicles on emergency services and carrying goods while the terminals wore a deserted look due to the absence of travellers.

Sincere efforts of law enforcement agencies in enforcement, convincing city dwellers to stay off the roads, rains throughout the day and public holiday, have coupled to success the restrictions.
