Rajshahi hospital records 13 more Covid-related deaths

Amid concerns over the spread of the Delta variant of coronavirus, Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) recorded 13 more Covid-19-related deaths in the 24 hours to Saturday morning.

Of them, five had tested Covid-19 positive while the rest were showing symptoms consistent with the disease, said hospital Director Brigadier General Shamim Yazdani.

Of the deceased, seven were from Rajshahi district, three from Natore and one each from Chapainawabganj, Pabna and Naogaon.

With the admission of 71 new patients, 478 people are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital’s Covid-19 unit. Another 20 patients are receiving medical care at the hospital’s ICU.

A total of 405 patients died at the Covid-19 unit in June, said the hospital director.

Bangladesh has enforced a seven-day countrywide lockdown, with effect from Thursday, amid a surge in Covid-19 cases and deaths.

In mid-April, restrictions on activities and movement were imposed across the country as cases and fatalities rose to their highest levels since the start of the pandemic.

The infection rate had declined in May, but started creeping up again in June.
