Woman tortured in remand: two Barishal police officers withdrawn

Two top officers of Uzirpur Police Station in Barishal were withdrawn after a murder case accused brought allegations of sexual harassment and torture in police custody.

They are: Ziaul Hasan, officer-in-charge, and Mainul Islam, inspector (investigation) of the police station.

SM Akhtaruzzaman, deputy inspector general of Barishal Range Police, said the police personnel were withdrawn so that they cannot influence the investigation into the allegation.

Besides, the woman is preparing to file a case. They will be made accused in the case too, the DIG told our Barishal Correspondent.

As the police personnel produced her before a court on Friday after two-day remand in a murder case, the woman told Judicial Magistrate Mahfuzur Rahman that Mainul, the investigation officer of the case, sexually harassed her and some other policemen tortured her.

Taking the allegations into cognizance, the court directed a health checkup on the woman and asked Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital's director to submit a report within 24 hours.

Doctors after conducting test submitted a report where they said injury marks were found on joints of both hands, neck and other parts of her body.

Contacted, Inspector Mainul earlier denied the allegations and termed those "false".
