Covid-19: Records tumble as Khulna reports highest 60 deaths; 1,900 cases

Khulna has become the worst Covid-affected division in the country.

On Wednesday morning, it logged as many as 1,900 Covid cases and 60 deaths in 24 hours, the highest single-day figures since March last year.

Of the deceased, 21 were from Khulna, 11 from Kushtia, seven from Jhenaidah, six from Jessore, five from Chuadanga, four from Narail, three from Bagerhat, two from Meherpur, and one from Magura district, confirmed Dr Rasheda Sultana, divisional director of health.

Of all the fatalities, 22 were reported from four Khulna hospitals.

Ten died at Khulna Medical College Hospital, five at Khulna General Hospital, five at Gazi Medical College Hospital, and two died at the Shahid Sheikh Abu Naser Specialized Hospital in the past 24 hours.

With the latest figures, the total number of deaths reached 1,365, while the total number of infections rose to 65,799 in Khulna.

On the other hand, total recoveries now stand at 43,378.

Just two days earlier, the division shattered all previous records in terms of deaths, with 51 people succumbing to the virus on Monday.

The district-wise breakdown of these deaths currently stands at 348 in Khulna, 286 in Kushtia, 187 in Jessore, 106 in Chuadanga, 95 in Bagerhat, 115 in Jhenaidah, 75 in Satkhira, 77 in Meherpur, 54 in Narail and 31 in Magura.

Amid an alarming surge in Covid-19 cases and deaths over the past few weeks, Khulna division is now clamouring for oxygen.

While a few hospitals in the Khulna division have already run out of the life-saving gas, many other medical facilities are operating on the edge due to an acute shortage of oxygen.

During the past week, seven Covid-19 patients have died at Satkhira Medical College Hospital in Satkhira district due to the unavailability of oxygen.

A probe was ordered into the deaths on June 30.
