Covid-19: Khulna sees record 71 single-day deaths

The Khulna division reported 71 Covid-19 deaths in the 24 hours to Friday morning, the highest single-day toll since the pandemic started in March last year.

The health authorities also that as many as 1,650 samples tested positive in all 10 districts of the division in the last 24 hours.

With the latest figures, Khulna Division’s death toll climbed to 1,487 and the total number of cases rose to 69,187.

Of the deceased, 23 were from Khulna, 14 from Kushtia, 10 from Jhenaidah, nine from Jessore, six from Chuadanga, five from Meherpur, two from Bagerhat, and one each from Magura and Narail, confirmed Dr Rasheda Sultana, the divisional director of health.

On Wednesday, the division had also shattered all previous records in terms of deaths, with 60 deaths and 1,900 new cases.

Amid the alarming surge in Covid-19 cases and deaths over the past few weeks, the division is now clamouring for oxygen.

While a few hospitals in the division have already run out of oxygen, many other medical facilities are operating on the edge due to an acute shortage of lifesaving gas.

Over the past week, seven Covid-19 patients died at Satkhira Medical College Hospital due to the unavailability of oxygen.
