BIWTC bans carrying passengers, passenger vehicles by ferries

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation on Friday banned movement of all passenger vehicles and passengers by ferries for an indefinite period.

Only movement of goods-laden vehicles and ambulances would be allowed following strict health regulations, said a press release.

The corporation issued the release on Friday noon, confirmed the shipping ministry senior information officer Md Jahangir Alam Khan.

Earlier on June 30, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority banned movement of all passenger carrying vessels including launches, trawlers and speedboats in the country between July 1 and July 7. The ban was later extended till July 14 amid the ongoing countywide restrictions on public movement and businesses.

The restrictions have almost faltered as people from different districts have started journeying back to their homes ahead of Eid-ul-Azha amid widespread violations and further surge in Covid cases and deaths in Bangladesh.

Many of the home-bound people crossed the River Padma by ferries on Thursday from Shimulia to travel to different south-western districts.
